In a recent gab fest on Variety’s Actors on Actors, Emily Blunt spilled the tea on how Meryl Streep did a 180 on her acting game post-The Devil Wears Prada. Anne Hathaway, Blunt’s partner in crime on the screen, chimed in, revealing that Streep was basically the Grinch of the set, unable to partake in the on-set shenanigans.
Hathaway spilled, “She wanted to be the life of the party, but she trapped herself in that character cage.” Blunt added her two cents, saying, “It was like watching a sad puppy. Sorry, Meryl, but it’s true!”
Later, Blunt spilled the beans on Streep’s post-Prada transformation. “Can you believe she swore off method acting forever after that?” she exclaimed to Hathaway. “She was like, ‘Never again! I’m not missing out on the party next time.'”
The Oppenheimer star continued, “She realized the glamour of being an ice queen wasn’t worth the FOMO.” Blunt even threw in some applause for Streep, dubbing her “the Ice Queen who thawed for us.”
Hathaway nodded in agreement, admitting that Streep, aka Miranda Priestly, would warm up during rehearsals, only to turn into a human iceberg when the cameras started rolling. “It was like watching Elsa from Frozen transform into Cruella de Vil,” Hathaway quipped.
In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Streep spilled the behind-the-scenes dirt, labeling her Devil Wears Prada stint as “horrible.” She dished, “I was stuck in my trailer like a lone wolf, listening to them having a blast outside. I thought, ‘Well, it’s the price I pay for being the boss!'” Streep declared it the ultimate mic drop on her flirtation with method acting, saying, “That’s the last time I tried to be a Method maniac!”
