Stop the presses, alert the Tony Awards, and somebody hand Oprah a tambourine—because Broadway just got Oprah-fied!
This week, the one and only Oprah Winfrey descended upon the Majestic Theatre in New York City like a benevolent theater goddess to witness Audra McDonald’s much-hyped, history-making performance as Mama Rose in Gypsy. And let’s be real—when Oprah Winfrey shows up to your show, it’s not just another Tuesday night. It’s the Tuesday night.
Naturally, Oprah did not come alone. Her ride-or-die bestie, Gayle King, was by her side, making this the most powerful best-friend duo to ever set foot in a Broadway theater since Elphaba and Glinda figured out how to share the spotlight.
After the show, Oprah and Gayle swept backstage to bestow their blessings upon Audra McDonald and the rest of the cast, including Joy Woods, Danny Burstein, Jordan Tyson, and Kevin Csolak—who probably still hasn’t recovered. Kevin even took to Instagram to share his reaction, writing:
“Every night I dedicate my little dream dance to something & when I heard Oprah was at our show you KNOW my aim was sending the love to the one and only! •• A dream within a dream 💛 😩”
A dream within a dream?! Somebody check on Kevin—he might be levitating.
Long story short: Gypsy is officially Oprah-approved, and if that’s not a reason to grab a ticket immediately, what is? So get to it before Oprah buys out the whole theater for a private performance.
