John Krasinski is stepping back into the limelight—this time, alone, on a stage, with no co-stars to distract you from his every move. Yes, the man who made looking into a camera an Olympic sport in The Office is taking on the Off-Broadway scene with Angry Alan, a dark comedy by Penelope Skinner.
Where Is This Theatrical Magic Happening?
The play will christen the brand-spanking-new Studio Seaview, which has taken over the ghost of the Tony Kiser Theatre at 305 West 43rd Street in Manhattan. If you know where that is, congratulations—you’re either a hardcore theater nerd or just very good at Google Maps.
Directing this one-man extravaganza is Tony Award-winning Sam Gold, who is probably wondering how he got talked into directing a play where only one person can forget their lines.
When Do We Witness the Krasinski Show?
Mark your calendars, because the strictly limited (aka “we don’t know if people will buy tickets for longer than this”) 10-week run starts May 23, 2025. The big, fancy opening night is set for June 11, 2025, which means that’s the night the critics will come out in their tiny glasses and furrowed brows.
Want tickets? Of course, you do. Sign up at AngryAlanPlay.com to get in on the EXCLUSIVE (ooh, fancy) 24-hour pre-sale at 10:00 AM ET on April 2. If you prefer to live on the edge and risk missing out, general sales start at 10:00 AM ET on April 3.
Wait, What Even Is This Play About?
Here’s the deal: Angry Alan follows a guy named Roger who is having, let’s say, a rough time. He’s divorced, demoted, and deeply confused by the modern world—so naturally, he turns to an online personality for answers. (We’ve all been there, Roger.) Before you know it, he’s tumbling down a digital rabbit hole, questioning reality, and possibly making some questionable life choices. It’s timely, it’s provocative, and it’s a deep dive into the weird world of online validation.
The play originally premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018 and has been bouncing around the globe ever since—like a really dramatic game of hot potato—before finally making its way to New York.
What Do the Fancy People Say?
“I couldn’t be more excited to return to Off-Broadway,” said Krasinski, who, let’s be honest, is probably just relieved to do something where he doesn’t have to direct, produce, and write it himself. “To be surrounded by such a force of talent in Penny and Sam is quite literally a dream scenario.” (Translation: If this flops, at least it’s not my fault.)
Writer Penelope Skinner and co-creator Don Mackay are still in shock that this is happening. “We never expected this play to go on such a thrilling journey,” they said, before probably checking if there’s an award category for ‘Best One-Man Spiral into Madness.’
And director Sam Gold? “I’ve been looking for years to lure John to the stage,” he admitted, confirming that he’s basically been hunting Krasinski like a theatrical Pokémon. “I can’t wait to get started.”
So, if you’ve ever wanted to watch Jim Halpert unravel in real-time, this is your chance. Get your tickets, prepare for some deep thoughts (and probably some very uncomfortable chuckles), and witness John Krasinski become Angry Alan. 🎭🔥
