Well, that didn’t take long.
President Donald Trump barely got through his opening remarks before things went completely off the rails during his first speech at the U.S. Capitol since his inauguration. And the star of the chaos? None other than Texas Congressman Al Green, who showed up ready to deliver his own personal State of the Union—uninvited, of course.
Green, 77, was in no mood for pleasantries. The moment Trump, 78, declared that his 2024 election victory over Kamala Harris was “a mandate like has not been seen in many decades,” Green went full Shakespearean protest mode, shaking his cane at Trump like he was about to cast a spell and yelling, “YOU HAVE NO MANDATE!”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, who probably wishes he called in sick, tried repeatedly to get Green to take a seat. But Green was fully committed to his moment of theatrical glory. So Johnson did what any exasperated teacher does with a disruptive student—called security.
“Finding that members continue to engage in willful and concerted disruption of proper decorum,” Johnson declared dramatically, flipping through the rulebook like he was reading the Ten Commandments, “the Chair now directs the Sergeant at Arms to restore order and remove this gentleman from the chamber.”
And just like that, Green was escorted out, but not before the Republican side of the room broke into an impromptu “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” performance like it was the closing night of a high school musical.
Outside the chamber, Green wasn’t backing down. Still fired up, he told reporters, “Look, as a person of conscience, I couldn’t just sit there while he lies about having a mandate. The man is out here trying to slash Medicaid like it’s a Black Friday sale. Someone had to say something.”
For those keeping track at home, this isn’t Green’s first rodeo when it comes to trying to evict Trump from office. Back during Trump’s first term, Green repeatedly tried to impeach him for what he called “high misdemeanors” (which, let’s be honest, sounds like a fancy way of saying “this guy is out of control”). And now, after Trump’s return to the White House, Green is still leading the “IMPEACH HIM AGAIN” campaign like it’s his full-time job.
And honestly? Given how Tuesday went down, it might as well be.
