Andrew Watt just gave us the behind-the-scenes scoop on what it’s like to make music with Lady Gaga, and spoiler alert: it sounds like an out-of-body experience mixed with a sprinkle of witchcraft.
The 34-year-old Grammy-winning producer and songwriter has teamed up with Gaga on bangers like “Die With a Smile,” “Disease,” and the latest spellbinding track, “Abracadabra.” While chatting for two whole hours (yes, TWO) on The Howard Stern Show, Andrew spilled the mystical beans about their studio time together.
“She just has a vision in her head the whole time,” he said, probably meaning she’s like a musical psychic. “Sometimes you’re talking to her, and she’s just gone—she sees the entire song before it even exists.” Which, honestly, sounds like something only Lady Gaga could pull off.
Apparently, “Abracadabra” turned into a song about a night out where someone casts a spell on you. Because obviously, Gaga doesn’t just write about love or heartbreak like a mere mortal—she writes about literal enchantment. And, because she’s extra (in the best way), she decided that part of the song needed to actually sound like a spell being cast. Poof!
As for what it’s like watching her work, Andrew says Gaga is basically a vocal superhero.
“When she steps up to the mic, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” he said. “She gives so much that she actually has to stop sometimes—her body starts shaking while she sings.” Imagine being so committed to your art that you physically vibrate. Gaga is on another level.
And guess what? We don’t have to wait too long for more of this magic—her new album Mayhem drops on March 7th. Prepare accordingly.
Oh, and in case you forgot that Andrew Watt is that guy, he’s also worked with everyone, from Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber to Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John. Speaking of Sir Elton, Andrew, Elton, Bernie Taupin, and Brandi Carlile are up for Best Original Song at the Oscars this weekend for “Never Too Late” from the *Elton John: Never Too Late* documentary.
Moral of the story? Andrew Watt makes bangers, Lady Gaga is part wizard, and March 7th can’t come soon enough.
