It looks like Jay-Z and the NFL are still holding hands and skipping down the partnership lane, according to some fresh news. Who knew Roger Goodell and Hov would become the dynamic duo we never asked for but can’t stop watching?
During the NFL owners’ meeting in Atlanta on Tuesday (October 15), Goodell gave us the scoop, saying:
“Everything’s peachy. No one’s sweating the small stuff like contracts. Jay’s happy. Desiree Perez is happy. I’m happy. It’s basically a happiness buffet over here.” (Thanks, Bloomberg, for capturing this corporate love fest.)
Let’s talk numbers. Their original deal was supposedly worth a cool $25 million over five years. That’s basically NFL pocket change but enough to make Roc Nation the Super Bowl party planner. On top of curating the halftime shows, Roc Nation has also been throwing money into the NFL’s “Inspire Change” social justice initiative—$375 million in grants, to be exact. Talk about leveling up both entertainment and doing good!
Since this power couple teamed up, they’ve given us halftime spectacles starring Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Dr. Dre and his posse, Rihanna, and Usher. That’s a lot of headliners, and a lot of glitter. (Seriously, where does all the glitter go after these shows?)
Oh, and just when you thought things couldn’t get any better—next year’s headliner will be Kendrick Lamar! So yeah, it’s official: Jay-Z and the NFL are staying together longer than some Hollywood marriages. Here’s hoping for more epic shows and fewer awkward Roger Goodell dance moves.
