The internet is having a full-blown existential crisis over whether Jack Antonoff threw some not-so-subtle shade at Billie Eilish in a recent interview.
Jack, the 40-year-old mastermind behind Bleachers and the secret sauce in Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey’s success, showed up on the Today Show and dropped a comment that’s got fans more divided than a pizza with pineapple.
During his deep dive into the soul-crushing world of songwriting, Jack said, “It’s hard to write unless you’re really compelled, and sometimes what compels you is way more serious things. I never feel like… You don’t hear a lot of great songs about like, one’s lunch order.”
As if that wasn’t enough to stir the pot, he added, “So the things you don’t really understand and cause you pain are usually things worth writing about.”
Enter stage left: the internet, which immediately grabbed its pitchforks and torches. An account on X (formerly known as Twitter, but let’s be real, it’ll always be Twitter in our hearts) posted a snippet of the interview and called Jack a “weirdo” for allegedly shading Billie.
Cue the internet’s version of a gladiator arena. Some fans jumped in, ready to defend Billie’s honor, while others were busy sharpening their knives for Jack. But a good chunk of the crowd pointed out that Jack didn’t drop Billie’s name like a bad mixtape.
One user, wielding the wisdom of a New Jersey native, proclaimed, “Jack Antonoff is from New Jersey. If he wanted to shade someone, he’d do it straight up. That man’s just talking about a turkey sandwich or something. Y’all need to relax.”
To back up their argument, they whipped out four of Jack’s tweets where he creatively refers to Kanye West as various types of “b-tch.” Classic.
And for those wondering, Billie’s song “Lunch” isn’t about sandwiches, salads, or any other midday meal. It’s actually about her attraction to women. So much for that theory.
Stay tuned. If we learn more, we’ll be here to fan the flames of this internet wildfire.
