Eric Roberts is doing the ultimate sibling faceplant and groveling in his new memoir! The 68-year-old actor, who’s currently moonlighting as a Dancing With the Stars contestant, has just dropped his tell-all, “Runaway Train: Or, The Story of My Life So Far.” Spoiler alert: it’s not just about his latest cha-cha moves!
In the book, Eric takes us on a wild ride through his substance abuse rollercoaster and recovery journey. And guess what? He’s decided now’s the time to issue a colossal apology to his younger sister, Julia Roberts. Yes, that Julia Roberts—America’s sweetheart and everyone’s favorite smiley face!
Apparently, back in the day when Eric was busy being a Hollywood hot mess, he said some pretty bonkers stuff about Julia. He even claimed, “If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.” Yeah, sure, because Julia just needed her big bro’s drug-fueled ego to make it big. Classic move.
Now, in his memoir, Eric is doing the humble pie dance, saying, “I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said.” (Translation: “Oops, I didn’t just step in it—I rolled in it.”)
Eric also admits that his drug habit turned him into a walking disaster zone for his sisters, Julia and Lisa, as well as his daughter, Emma Roberts. He wrote, “Lisa and Julia needed love and protection — instead they got fear and uncertainty.” So basically, he was like a tornado of chaos in their lives, only without the cool spinny wind part.
“The biggest consequence of my drug use was losing Emma,” he laments. But, never fear, Eric’s on a redemption tour! He’s hoping to make things right and is committed to sticking around as Julia’s brother and Emma’s dad. And writing a book seems like a good start—because nothing says “I’m sorry” quite like a few hundred pages of introspection.
Meanwhile, on the Dancing With the Stars front, Eric made his debut on the 33rd season with pro dancer Britt Stewart. Their first dance was a Cha Cha to “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Seger. Unfortunately, their cha-cha didn’t quite dazzle, earning them the lowest score of the night—a dazzling 15 out of 30. But hey, at least he’s dancing his way through this apology tour!
