Timothée Chalamet is back in action, and this time he’s… Marty Supreme?! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the 28-year-old heartthrob and Oscar-nominee has graced the gritty streets of New York City, bringing a whole lot of mustache and mystery to the set of his upcoming flick Marty Supreme on Monday (Sept. 30).
First off, let’s talk about that look. Timmy’s rocking a shorter haircut, a teensy-weensy mustache (possibly borrowed from the Monopoly Man), and an outfit that screams, “I just woke up from a thrift store nap!” He strutted around in a navy vest, light green shirt, and brown pants. Oh, and let’s not forget the glasses. The man has clearly been consulting his fashion advisor: a time-traveling librarian from 1976.
What’s this movie about? Well, the plot is more secret than the Krabby Patty formula. But rumor has it, Marty Supreme is loosely (and I mean loosely like your grandma’s knitted sweater) inspired by ping pong legend Marty Reisman. Ping pong! That’s right. Timmy is set to become the “Lord of the Paddle,” stepping into the shoes of a man who made table tennis as dramatic as a Broadway musical. For those not in the know, Marty Reisman was essentially the Gandalf of ping pong, known as the “Wizard of Table Tennis.” The man hustled his way through Manhattan’s ping pong underground (yes, that’s a thing) like a Jedi with a ping pong paddle.
Marty wasn’t just a champ — he was the champ, winning 22 major titles and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships. In a plot twist that would make even M. Night Shyamalan gasp, Marty was still wrecking opponents with a paddle at the tender age of 67! That’s right, he schooled everyone at the 2007 U.S. National Hardbat Championship, becoming the oldest athlete to spank people in an open national racket sport. Legend.
Unfortunately, Marty hung up his paddle for good in December 2012, when he passed away at the age of 82. But his legacy? Still bouncing around like an uncatchable ping pong ball.
Josh Safdie (the man who brought you Uncut Gems — aka the movie that made you feel like you were having a panic attack at a casino) will be directing this masterpiece. Reuniting with the indie powerhouse A24, Safdie co-wrote the script with his partner-in-crime Ronald Bronstein. We can only imagine the chaos that awaits.
So, stay tuned, because if Timothée doesn’t make ping pong the hottest sport of the century, then nothing will.
