Sandra Oh, aka the queen of surgical sass, played the iconic Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy for 10 whole seasons before peacing out in 2014. Since then, she has been the human embodiment of the “nope” meme whenever someone asks if she’d return to the show. But guess what? That might be changing.
In a shocking twist worthy of Shonda Rhimes herself, Sandra is now saying… maybe. And honestly, that’s the biggest commitment she’s made to Grey’s in a decade.
“For the longest time, it was a hard no,” Sandra told IconicHipster.com while celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary. “And now? I just… I don’t know. I just don’t know.” (Which, honestly, is the same energy we all have when trying to decide what to watch on Netflix.)
Sandra explained that leaving the show was A Process (yes, capital P), and she put a lot of effort into moving on. “I just cannot tell you… I can’t stress to you enough how consciously I tried to fully process leaving,” she said, presumably while a Grey’s fan sobbed in the background.
But she gets it—she really does. Fans still adore Cristina Yang, and Sandra totally understands why. “That’s the part that makes me just go, hmmm.” (Translation: Y’all are making this really hard for me to keep saying no.)
In the meantime, she’s happy that Cristina is still alive and well via Grey’s text messages. “The character should still be there to service the story—so, yay!” she said.
So, will she or won’t she? The answer is… a very tentative shrug. But hey, after 10 years of a firm “no,” we’ll take it.
