In what feels like a tragic plot twist ripped straight from a rap-themed soap opera, the legendary FatMan Scoop has sadly checked out of this earthly concert. The news of his unexpected exit came Saturday (August 31), a day after he gave one last, very literal “drop the mic” performance, collapsing on stage mid-song. FatMan Scoop, forever young at heart, was 53 but with the energy of a toddler hyped up on pixie sticks.
Missy Elliott, queen of beats and unmatched funky hats, took to social media to honor her old partner in crime. And, boy, did she bring the feels. Missy, also 53 (clearly the universe’s way of saying ’53 is the new 20′), didn’t waste time dropping some love for the man who put “loud voice” on the map.
She wrote on X (because apparently, we don’t tweet anymore; we “X”):
“Prayers for Fatman Scoop’s family for STRENGTH during this tough time 🙏🏾. Fatman Scoop’s VOICE & energy have been the musical equivalent of a double-shot espresso for over 2 decades, making people get up, get down, and break out moves they didn’t even know they had. Your IMPACT is as HUGE as your vocal cords & will NEVER be forgotten. 🕊️🙏🏾”
Now, if you’re not already dancing in his memory, you might recall that FatMan Scoop lent his legendary pipes to Missy’s 2005 banger “Lose Control.” Yes, that’s the song that made every wedding reception look like a Zumba class on fast-forward. They made magic together, the kind that makes you shimmy, shake, and question all your life choices at 3 a.m. on a dance floor.
So, as we bid farewell to FatMan Scoop, let’s raise our imaginary microphones and shout his signature “FatMan Scooooooop!” just one more time for the man who could shout you into a dance frenzy like no one else. Rest in power, Scoop – your voice will echo in the club forever. 🎤💥
Prayers for Fatman Scoop family for STRENGTH during this difficult time🙏🏾 Fatman Scoop VOICE & energy have contributed to MANY songs that made the people feel HAPPY & want to dance for over 2 decades. Your IMPACT is HUGE & will be NEVER be forgotten..🕊️🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/e4R9Z3inKd
