The internet just unearthed another case of “Oops, I tweeted that?” starring none other than Karla Sofia Gascon and her now-deleted X (formerly Twitter, always problematic) account.
The 52-year-old actress—yes, the one who just nabbed an Oscar nomination—decided to go full Houdini on social media after some, shall we say, less-than-kind tweets resurfaced, featuring a not-so-sweet nickname for her Emilia Perez castmate Selena Gomez. And it was not “bestie” or “queen.”
What’s the Tweet Tea?
According to the digital detectives of the Latin Times, Karla once shared a post about Selena and Hailey Bieber’s shock-the-world moment at the 2022 Academy Museum Gala (yes, that event where they posed together and sent Jelena fans into cardiac arrest). In her translated tweet, Karla allegedly called Selena a “rich rat” who “plays the poor b-stard whenever she can.” Ouch. That’s not just shade; that’s a full-blown solar eclipse.
And just to spice up the drama, the tweet happened AFTER she and Selena were rumored to be working together on Emilia Perez—which is like bringing cupcakes to a party after calling the host a gremlin. Awkward.
Karla’s Apology (or Something Like It)
After realizing the internet does not, in fact, come with an “unsend” button, Karla scrambled to issue multiple apologies. The latest one, posted February 1, is basically the written equivalent of saying, “Wait, that’s not what I meant!” while nervously deleting old receipts.
In it, she vaguely alludes to the chaos, saying people have taken her words and twisted them into “insults against even my colleagues.” Karla then adds that her past comments were “glorifications disguised as criticisms”, and “jokes that without context sound like hate.”
Translation? “I was being sarcastic, guys!”
Will Selena respond? Will Karla’s next role be playing herself in the inevitable Netflix documentary about celebrity Twitter meltdowns? Stay tuned.
