Our favorite sharp-tongued, baby-faced comedian, John Mulaney, is stepping out of the stand-up spotlight and into… a talk show. Yes, you heard that right. Mulaney, the guy who made us cry-laugh about French fries and horses in hospitals, is now going to be your weekly guide to who-knows-what starting in 2025. Why? Because Netflix said so, and let’s be honest, they already own our weekends, so what’s one more show?
The big announcement came courtesy of Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer and unofficial President of the John Mulaney Fan Club. While speaking at Bloomberg Screentime in LA, she practically screamed from the rooftops, “JOHN MULANEY IS BACK, PEOPLE!”—well, not quite, but she did say she’s “super excited,” and in Netflix talk, that’s basically jumping up and down.
In true Mulaney fashion, this new project is described as a “live weekly talk show”—which, if it’s anything like his past work, will be less “talk” and more *“how did we end up here?”* vibes. Bajaria gave us some details but kept it cryptic enough to keep us guessing, saying the show will be bold, fresh, and—brace yourselves—“unpredictable.” That’s right. Netflix is now embracing the chaotic energy of a comedian who once spent 10 minutes ranting about why we all lie to our doctors.
She also threw in a little wink-wink nudge-nudge about how Mulaney’s live show Everybody’s in LA didn’t exactly break the internet with viewership numbers, but hey, it was a “learning exercise,” which sounds like the kind of thing you tell your boss when your PowerPoint accidentally deletes itself. But this time, they’re swinging for the fences again, and with Mulaney at the helm, who wouldn’t?
Bajaria reassured the crowd that Mulaney is “wildly talented” and “creative,” which is Hollywood-speak for “We have no idea what he’ll do next, but it’s gonna be hilarious.” In true Netflix fashion, they’re also embracing the “go big or go home” mantra, so expect risky swings, unexpected turns, and maybe a sketch or two where John just teaches us how to properly order at a McDonald’s drive-thru.
The show’s set to premiere in early 2025, giving us plenty of time to speculate about whether there will be recurring segments where Mulaney just roasts his audience or dramatically retells childhood anecdotes about detectives named J.J. Bittenbinder.
And in case you’re wondering if Mulaney’s Netflix resume is stacked, well, duh. He’s already gifted us with the award-winning Kid Gorgeous and Baby J, plus The Comeback Kid, which remains a comedic masterpiece. Not to mention, he unleashed John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch—the variety show none of us knew we needed, but now can’t live without. So yeah, he’s pretty much Netflix’s golden child at this point.
So mark your calendars, set your reminders, and stock up on snacks because 2025 is going to be the year of Mulaney. Netflix is betting big on him, and we’re all about to be along for one wild, talk-show-shaped ride!
