‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot: Because Nothing Stays Dead Anymore (Not Even TV Shows)

Buy Me A Coffee

Buffy Summers is dusting off her wooden stakes and getting ready to slay again—because apparently, no TV show ever truly dies, it just gets rebooted… over and over again!

More than 20 years after she hung up her vampire-slaying boots (and somehow managed to survive seven seasons of constant supernatural drama), Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back! Hulu is reportedly on the verge of giving the reboot a pilot order, and yes—Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to return as Buffy Summers. Because let’s be real, nobody else could pull off those sassy one-liners while kicking a vampire in the face.

And here’s the plot twist: Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (yes, the one behind Nomadland and Marvel’s Eternals) is set to direct the pilot, which is being written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). So, expect Buffy to have some serious indie cinema vibes, maybe with a few brooding shots of vampires contemplating their immortal existence.

But wait, there’s more! Among the executive producers is none other than Dolly Parton—yes, the country legend! Fun fact: her company Sandollar actually produced the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. We can only hope that means Buffy will get a Dolly-approved soundtrack and maybe some bedazzled stakes.

As for Joss Whedon? The Buffy creator is not involved, which isn’t exactly shocking considering the allegations of misconduct that surfaced from former cast members and other Hollywood figures. Looks like this new Buffyverse is moving forward without its original mastermind.

This will officially be the third series in the Buffyverse, following the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which ran from 1997-2003) and its equally broody but less witty spinoff Angel (1999-2004). No word yet on which, if any, original cast members might return, but if Hulu is smart, they’ll find a way to bring back at least one of Buffy’s old vampire boyfriends.

So, get ready for another round of vampires, sarcastic quips, and emotional damage—because Buffy is back, and this time, it’s in the hands of Chloé Zhao and Dolly Parton. What a time to be alive.
