Audrina Patridge, the once-upon-a-time star of The Hills, is revisiting a somber chapter in her family’s saga – her niece’s unfortunate exit from this world.
At 38, Audrina found herself reflecting on the heartbreaking departure of her niece, Sadie, who tragically succumbed to a narcotics overdose in February 2023, tenderly bidding adieu at a mere 15 years of age.
Fast forward a year post-Sadie’s departure, and Audrina delves into the aftermath, particularly how her 7-year-old bundle of joy, Kirra, grappled with the profound loss.
“Every morning feels like an emotional roller coaster, especially when I drop Kirra off at school. It’s like a mini-drama series – ‘Will mommy return?’ she frets,” Audrina shared, with a dash of humor, on Rachel Bilson’s Broad Ideas podcast.
Describing the daily routine, she paints a picture of affectionate rituals: “It’s a ritual of kisses – one on the lips, one on the noggin’, and a tight squeeze. If we dare deviate, cue the waterworks at school.”
Recalling the delicate task of explaining Sadie’s untimely exit to Kirra, Audrina recounts how the hospital staff donned their capes and took charge. “The hospital staff became our unsung heroes, orchestrating a symphony of distraction for the bewildered kiddos. Toys, colors, and a storytime session – the whole nine yards,” Audrina reminisced. “They gathered the troops, armed them with crayons, and laid it out gently, like a bedtime tale.”
And as for those heart-to-heart chats with Kirra about Sadie’s departure, Audrina adopts a delicate balance – “honest yet enigmatically vague,” she quips. “I’m walking the tightrope between truth and sparing her from the shadows of fear. But now, it’s a daily tango with the haunting question – ‘What if mommy vanishes into thin air?'”
