You know you’re in a real relationship when your partner lies about going to the bathroom just to pull off a masterful surprise. That’s exactly what Ashanti did when she shocked her husband, the one and only Nelly, during the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards!

The 50-year-old rap legend (yes, FIFTY—where did the time go?!) was busy soaking up the spotlight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood when Ashanti swooped in like a Grammy-winning ninja to present him with the Landmark Award. Nelly thought she was just making a quick pit stop, but no—she was cooking up a surprise sweeter than a St. Louis BBQ platter.

The Ultimate Midwest Flex
With all the grace of a seasoned award-show pro, Ashanti took the mic and delivered a speech that had the audience nodding like they were at a Sunday church service.

“Back in the day, when people thought about rap, it was all East Coast vs. West Coast. But then in 2000, a dude from St. Louis pulled up and said, ‘Hold my mic,’” she declared. “That man was Nelly, and he changed the game forever.”

She then dropped some stats that would make even the nerdiest chart analyst shed a tear:

25 years since Nelly’s debut album Country Grammar hit the scene.
6 weeks at the top of the charts.
10 million copies sold, making it one of the most successful hip-hop albums ever.

And just like that, Ashanti made sure everyone in the room knew they were in the presence of Midwest rap royalty.

A Performance Hotter Than “Hot in Herre”
Nelly, not one to miss a golden opportunity, took the stage and delivered a medley of bangers that had everyone from Gen X to Gen Z screaming the lyrics like they were in a time machine. “Country Grammar,” “Ride Wit Me,” “E.I.,” and “Hot in Herre” turned the Dolby Theatre into a full-blown early-2000s house party.
