Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Apologize For Their ‘Wicked’ Crying Streak: ‘Sorry, We’re Just Emotional Wrecks’

Buy Me A Coffee

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been crying rivers, and they’re apparently very sorry about it! The two stars are in full-blown press mode, jet-setting around the globe for the Wicked movie musical, and, well, there’s just something about talking about magical green faces and high notes that brings on the waterworks.

“The Apology Tour, but for Tears”
In what can only be described as an emotional public service announcement, Ariana Grande came right out with it: “Look, this is a PSA. Sorry, guys. So sorry.” There it is, straight from the pop princess herself. As for Cynthia? She’s on the same page: “There’s just nothing we can do about it,” she added with a shrug. So it’s official—there’s no saving these two from a tearful meltdown. Not now, not ever.

Ariana then took things to a hilarious level of self-awareness: “Honestly, if you’re thinking of leaving a comment like, ‘Ugh, enough with the tears!’—let me just tell you, I said it first. I’m annoyed. My tear ducts are overworked, exhausted! I’m emotionally tired!” We’re talking next-level tired, like the kind of tired you feel after watching a two-hour slideshow of your mom’s childhood photos tired.

The Support Group You Never Knew You Needed
Cynthia chimed in with an emotional side-note: “We’ve come through this massive, massive thing and just…really stuck together.” You’d think they’d survived some kind of enchanted forest or epic battle, but nope—it’s just been one song, one tearful reflection, and a lot of hugging after another. “Yeah,” Ariana added, nodding sagely, “The stuff you don’t see is the most special stuff.” (So true, Ari, so true. But, um, could we get a peek at that ‘unseen special stuff’? Just wondering.)

At the L.A. premiere, the apologetic flood continued. “We’re sorry,” Cynthia told ET, sounding like someone who’d just eaten all the dessert at a dinner party. “It happens. We’re just going with it.” Ariana then dropped some serious reality on the critics: “Listen, it’s been three years, people! Why does emotional availability scare you so much?”

Next Stop: Tears in Mexico!
Brace yourselves, Mexico City—the Wicked press tour (and probably a tidal wave of more tears) is coming for you. Just make sure you’re stocked up on tissues for when Ariana and Cynthia inevitably get misty-eyed talking about “defying gravity” and their epic friendship.
