In a heartwarming yet totally adorable plot twist from the universe that brought us eternal coolness and vintage vibes, Winona Ryder recently dished on her long-running bromance (or should we say rom-com?) with none other than Keanu “Still the Coolest Dude Ever” Reeves.
These two legendary stars have been gracing our screens with their combined powers since way back in 1992, starting with Bram Stoker’s Dracula — the movie where Keanu played a confused real estate agent and Winona rocked a variety of hairstyles that still haunt our dreams (in a good way). But here’s the kicker: Winona dropped the bomb that their friendship is so strong, they even have pet names for each other. Cue the collective “Aww!”
While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast — a perfect name for how we all feel when Keanu is on screen — Winona was asked if she’d ever team up with Keanu for a John Wick movie. She admitted she wasn’t exactly feeling like the next action hero, mostly because, well, flipping bad guys over her shoulder sounds tricky. But naturally, she took the opportunity to remind us that Keanu is extra special, like the last slice of pizza no one fights over because they’re saving it for you.
“We do text,” Winona revealed, dropping knowledge like a texting pro. “And we always tell each other who it is… you know, just in case we forget how phones work.”
But here’s where things get spicy: Apparently, ever since their characters tied the knot in Dracula, these two call each other “husband” and “wife.” Yes, you read that right. Somewhere in an alternate universe, they’re still happily married — probably riding horses in slow motion or dramatically staring at each other through fog.
Winona even shared her birthday tradition with Keanu, where she sends him a text that probably reads, “Happy birthday, my immortal husband!” to which Keanu responds with something effortlessly cool like, “Hey, wife! Love you! KR, 57.” (The man signs off like a secret agent every year, because of course he does. Keanu is nothing if not consistent.)
Apparently, Keanu’s birthday message format is set in stone: age, initials, and a lot of love. KR, 57. KR, 58. KR, infinity. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
As if we needed another reason to love Winona, she’s also making her grand return to the big screen in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, hitting theaters on September 6. Just don’t say the title three times in front of a mirror… unless you’re ready for more spooky adventures, 90s nostalgia, and possibly Keanu popping up out of nowhere to wish someone a happy birthday.
