Jake Gyllenhaal waltzed into the May 18 episode of Saturday Night Live and kicked things off with a bang—a musical bang, to be precise!
The 43-year-old heartthrob from Road House graced the famous SNL stage for the third time, ready to bring the house down with his charm and wit.
During his opening monologue, Jake quipped about his luck in hosting the season finale of the 49th season instead of the much-hyped premiere of the 50th season. Because why start a milestone season when you can close out the one just shy of it?
Then, in a move no one saw coming, Jake transformed the stage into a ’90s R&B dream by breaking into an SNL-themed version of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” Because nothing says “Saturday Night Live” like a power ballad about…Saturday Night Live.
Our man Jake couldn’t resist poking fun at the star-studded guest list that wasn’t. According to him, Pedro Pascal, Zendaya, and Ryan Gosling (who practically lives at 30 Rock these days) all passed on tonight’s gig. Cue Jake heroically stepping up to the plate—because when Hollywood says “no,” Jake says “let’s sing!”
With mic in hand and a few co-stars backing him up, Jake delivered a performance that was part SNL, part concert, and all heart.
He also couldn’t resist a jab at his Road House co-star, Conor McGregor. Jake joked that 49 is not just the number of SNL seasons but also the number of times Conor accidentally punched him during filming. He wrapped it up by saying that he always praises the MMA fighter, but only because he’s terrified Conor might be lurking around the corner.
And so, the stage was set for a night of laughs, music, and a host who’s always ready to roll with the punches—literally.
