Kansas City Chief’s very own Travis Kelce has finally decided to spill the beans on teammate Harrison Butker’s wild and wacky commencement speech.
In case you missed the internet explosion, 28-year-old kicker Harrison Butker decided to jazz up a graduation speech at Benedictine College by diving headfirst into hot topics like abortion rights, the LGBTQ+ community, working women, and even threw in a Taylor Swift quote for good measure. The result? An online firestorm that could rival any Super Bowl halftime show.
Our MVP Patrick Mahomes had already given his two cents, but now, the man, the myth, the mustache – Travis Kelce, 34, is stepping up to the mic on his New Heights podcast.
“I love Butker as a teammate. I think Pat hit the nail on the head when he said Harrison is a top-notch guy and an awesome teammate,” Travis began, presumably while juggling footballs and twirling a baton.
“He’s always treated my family and anyone I introduce to him with respect and kindness. And that’s how he treats everyone. Now, about his Saint Benedict’s speech – those opinions are all his,” Travis continued, likely while balancing on a unicycle. “I can’t say I agree with most of it or any of it, really, except for his love for his family. And hey, I’m not here to judge his views, especially the religious ones. That’s just not my jam.”
Travis then took a detour down memory lane, reminiscing about his colorful upbringing in Ohio. “I grew up surrounded by a melting pot of social classes, religions, races, and ethnicities in Cleveland Heights. That’s why I love it there – it showed me the whole circus of life. I appreciated every single act, never feeling the need to judge based on beliefs.”
He continued, “My mom and dad were like the dynamic duo of homemaking and providing. They were the best ringmasters in the circus of my life. I don’t think everyone should run their household like mine did, but I’m forever grateful and love them for it. They made home the Big Top it was, and I wouldn’t be the same person without them.”
Just when you thought it couldn’t get better, in swoops Travis’s brother, Jason Kelce, with his own brand of wisdom. “I appreciate hearing from folks who actually know Harrison,” Jason said, probably while tightrope walking. “Let’s remember, he gave that speech in a religious environment. Surprise, surprise – it was very religious and Catholic.”
Jason wrapped it up with a flourish, “You’re always going to hear opinions you don’t agree with. I don’t align with a lot of what he said, but I can still find value in his talk about family and the importance of a great mother. That doesn’t mean everyone needs to be a homemaker if that’s not their thing.”
The Kelce brothers have spoken, and their circus tent is still standing strong.
