Angelina Jolie is now officially a soprano. In the debut trailer for Maria, the Oscar-winner transforms into the legendary Maria Callas, giving us high notes, high drama, and, let’s be honest, probably some high-maintenance diva behavior.
Directed by Pablo Larraín (aka the mastermind behind Spencer), the film dives into the life of Callas, the American-Greek opera icon. After decades of dazzling stages, throwing shade, and living the most extra life imaginable, Callas retreats to Paris to do what we all wish we could: reflect, soul search, and maybe throw a wine glass or two in peace. Maria zooms in on these final days as the diva tackles the ultimate existential question: Who am I?—besides someone with pipes that could shatter crystal chandeliers.
But it’s not all about Angelina channeling the spirit of Callas. The movie also packs in a star-studded buffet of talent, including Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Haluk Bilginer. These are names you pretend you’ve heard of to sound cultured, but trust me—they all deliver performances as polished as Jolie’s cheekbones.
Circle those calendars: Maria will hit select theaters in the U.S. on November 27—because nothing says “Happy Thanksgiving” like existential crises and opera. For those of you who’d rather Netflix and belt (instead of Netflix and chill), it lands on the streaming platform December 11.
Oh, and did I mention the film got an 8-minute standing ovation at The Venice Film Festival? That’s longer than some of my relationships. Word on the street is that Angelina’s portrayal is so good, she might just have to make room on her mantel for another Oscar. (Her other trophies are already in therapy over the competition.)
Trailer below—watch it, and prepare to tell your friends you “suddenly” appreciate opera. 🎶
