Shawn Mendes is baring his soul (and possibly his underwear) with his new single, “Why Why Why.” It’s like he’s throwing a wild party with his feelings, and everyone’s invited!
This toe-tapping therapy session will be on his self-titled album, *Shawn*, and he’s just dropped a music video for it. Spoiler alert: there’s no chance of him doing a moonwalk out of this one.
In the song, Shawn spills the beans about his canceled tour and taking a breather from the limelight. He sings, “I stepped off the stage with nothin’ left / All the lights were f–king with my head / But here I am, singing songs again / Why? Why? Why? Ease my mind.” It’s like he’s asking the universe, “Why do bad things happen to good singers?”
And just when you thought the song couldn’t get any juicier, Shawn throws in a plot twist about almost becoming a dad. Because why not?
In an interview with Apple Music that sounds like it could’ve been conducted in a cozy therapy session, Shawn explained the song’s existential drama. “So, ‘Why Why Why’ was kind of like a joke in the studio,” he said, “Whenever I had a meltdown, everyone was like, ‘Oh boy, a killer track is coming!’ It was like our version of musical chicken soup for the soul.”
He continued, “The words ‘why, why, why’ felt like a powerful cry for help or maybe just a good excuse to use his therapist’s name in a song. It’s like it’s both heartbreaking and beautiful. Like a really good pizza that’s also healthy for your soul.”
