Selena Gomez and David Henrie reunited on the red carpet like it was a magical time warp straight out of Wizards of Waverly Place. The duo was spotted at the premiere of David’s new film Monster Summer at the DGA Theater Complex in LA on Tuesday (September 24), looking like they just stepped out of a time machine that also specializes in producing horror movies.
Selena, now 32 and still as fabulous as ever, was there to cheer on her on-screen (and off-screen?) big bro David, 35, who’s traded his wand for a director’s chair. Yep, David’s back at it again, directing his second feature film. We’re starting to wonder if he directs with the same finesse he used to help save the world from magical disasters.
The dynamic duo wasn’t alone though. They were seen striking poses with the Monster Summer cast, a gang that sounds more like the cast of a teen mystery novel than an actual movie: Mason Thames, Julian Lerner, Abby James Witherspoon (with the most relatable name ever), Noah Cottrell, Nora Zehetner, Patrick Renna, Lilah Pate, and Mel “Wait, what is he doing here?” Gibson. Yes, that Mel Gibson, who even dragged along his mini-Gibsons, Lucia (14) and Lars (7), for a rare red carpet appearance. It’s like Bring Your Kids to Work Day but way fancier.
David’s whole family showed up like it was a neighborhood block party. His wife Maria was there, alongside his dad James and brother Lorenzo, who conveniently also double as producers on the movie. (No pressure, family business, right?) Also making an appearance were David’s former magical castmates from Wizards Beyond Waverly Place (yep, it’s a thing now), including Mimi Gianopulos, Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, and Taylor Cora—proving that some friendships are truly forever, or at least as long as there’s a camera around.
Now, what’s this Monster Summer movie about, you ask? Well, it’s basically a bunch of kids, led by Noah (played by Mason Thames), whose summer vibes get wrecked by a mysterious force. Naturally, they team up with a retired police detective, played by none other than Mel “I Do Everything” Gibson, to save their island from a summer bummer of monstrous proportions. Think Scooby-Doo but with fewer snacks and way more intensity.
Monster Summer is set to terrify your local theaters on October 4. So mark your calendars and grab some popcorn—or, you know, a flashlight for protection.
