So, Ryan Murphy, aka the guy who can turn literally anything into a TV show, has responded to Erik Menendez, one-half of the famous (infamous?) Menendez brothers. These guys didnโt just make headlines for their 1989 family spat in Beverly Hills (and by spat, I mean they literally shot their parents), but now theyโre back in the news! Why, you ask? Oh, because Netflix just dropped a fresh, new season of Monsters, and guess whoโs in the spotlight this time? Yup, Lyle and Erik Menendez.
Now, Erikโs not exactly jazzed about this. Heโs wagging his finger at the show, saying itโs all packed with lies โ like, full-on โpants-on-fireโ lies. He even threw a little shade Ryan Murphyโs way, hinting that Ryan must either be living under a rock or has no idea what actually went down back in ’89.
Ryan, of course, had a moment with ET (because where else do celebrities hash out their beef?) and basically said, โWait, what? He hasnโt even seen the show yet!โ Classic move, right? Criticizing without even pressing play on Netflix. Ryan added, โDude, I get it. Itโs hard seeing your life turned into binge-worthy content. Not everyoneโs into that, I guess?โ
But hereโs the kicker: Ryanโs like, โListen, about 60-65% of the show is all about the abuse they claimed they went through. We didnโt just skim over it. No, no. We gave it the spotlight, center stage, jazz hands and all! Heck, we practically gave them a second trial on-screen. Youโre welcome, Erik.โ
Ryan also wanted to remind everyone that putting all this family drama on TV can get, well, tricky. Cue the โRashomonโ reference, where four people experienced the same event but had wildly different stories. Except here, two of those people are, you knowโฆ not alive. So Ryanโs team did their homework and made sure to sprinkle in the parents’ perspective too, just for good measure.
Oh, and letโs not forget the awkward elephant in the room: the whole โare-the-brothers-way-too-closeโ thing. Ryan was like, โWe didnโt just throw that in there for funsies, okay? Vanity Fairโs Dominick Dunne had that theory out there, and weโre just doing our due diligence. Weโre showing all the angles โ even the weird ones.โ
Ryan Murphy, TV wizard, defending his show like itโs on trial, and Erik Menendez just trying to protect his familyโs honor โ you know, whatโs left of it.
