So, Ryan Murphy, aka the guy who can turn literally anything into a TV show, has responded to Erik Menendez, one-half of the famous (infamous?) Menendez brothers. These guys didn’t just make headlines for their 1989 family spat in Beverly Hills (and by spat, I mean they literally shot their parents), but now they’re back in the news! Why, you ask? Oh, because Netflix just dropped a fresh, new season of Monsters, and guess who’s in the spotlight this time? Yup, Lyle and Erik Menendez.
Now, Erik’s not exactly jazzed about this. He’s wagging his finger at the show, saying it’s all packed with lies – like, full-on “pants-on-fire” lies. He even threw a little shade Ryan Murphy’s way, hinting that Ryan must either be living under a rock or has no idea what actually went down back in ’89.
Ryan, of course, had a moment with ET (because where else do celebrities hash out their beef?) and basically said, “Wait, what? He hasn’t even seen the show yet!” Classic move, right? Criticizing without even pressing play on Netflix. Ryan added, “Dude, I get it. It’s hard seeing your life turned into binge-worthy content. Not everyone’s into that, I guess?”
But here’s the kicker: Ryan’s like, “Listen, about 60-65% of the show is all about the abuse they claimed they went through. We didn’t just skim over it. No, no. We gave it the spotlight, center stage, jazz hands and all! Heck, we practically gave them a second trial on-screen. You’re welcome, Erik.”
Ryan also wanted to remind everyone that putting all this family drama on TV can get, well, tricky. Cue the “Rashomon” reference, where four people experienced the same event but had wildly different stories. Except here, two of those people are, you know… not alive. So Ryan’s team did their homework and made sure to sprinkle in the parents’ perspective too, just for good measure.
Oh, and let’s not forget the awkward elephant in the room: the whole “are-the-brothers-way-too-close” thing. Ryan was like, “We didn’t just throw that in there for funsies, okay? Vanity Fair’s Dominick Dunne had that theory out there, and we’re just doing our due diligence. We’re showing all the angles – even the weird ones.”
Ryan Murphy, TV wizard, defending his show like it’s on trial, and Erik Menendez just trying to protect his family’s honor – you know, what’s left of it.
