Lorde, our favorite melodramatic songstress who makes heartbreak sound like fine poetry, decided to casually invite all of New York City to hang out. Literally. She sent a cryptic 4pm text like she was planning a casual wine night:
“Meet me in the park. Tonight 7pm – xx.”
No park name, no RSVP, just “vibes.” Bold. Iconic. Mildly chaotic.
Naturally, her detective-level fans cracked the code faster than you can say “Green Light.” They zeroed in on Washington Square Park, also known as NYU’s unofficial backyard and home to at least five jazz saxophonists and three shirtless jugglers at any given moment.
Why the pop-up? Well, Lorde is about to drop her new song “What Was That” (which is not only a song title, but also what her fans were saying when the cops showed up). She even teased the track with a moody stroll through Washington Square Park. So yes, it was all coming together… until it wasn’t.
Cue the NYPD, stage left.
Apparently, when thousands of glittery-eyed fans show up chanting Lorde lyrics like it’s a sacred ritual, things get a tad overwhelming. The police were like, “Ma’am, this isn’t Coachella. Please disperse.”
Lorde, being the graceful elf she is, popped on Instagram with a heartfelt apology:
“Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down. I am truly amazed by how many of you showed up!!! But they’re telling me you gotta disperse… I’m so sorry.”
Translation: “This was supposed to be a chill hangout, but y’all made it a full-blown Woodstock. I love you, but also… run before the NYPD starts handing out citations.”
No word yet on if she’ll reschedule this spontaneous fan-fest, but fingers crossed it’s in a venue with, like, bathrooms and a fire marshal.
Until then, we wait. Possibly in a different park. Preferably with snacks.
