Lily-Rose Depp is opening up about her dad, Johnny Depp, in a way that’s equal parts rare and wildly relatable! Spoiler: It involves scissors, childhood trauma, and a little side of existential dread.
In a fresh interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the 25-year-old star of the upcoming Nosferatu (yes, she’s starring in a vampire flick—more on that later) dished about which of Johnny’s iconic roles left her forever shook. And let’s just say, it’s not the one where he wore eyeliner and said “savvy” a lot.
So, apparently, when Lily-Rose was just 3 years old—an age when most of us were busy shoving crayons up our noses—her famous parents thought it would be totally fine to let her watch Edward Scissorhands. You know, the movie where Johnny Depp runs around with literal blades for hands and a perpetually sad face? Yeah, that one.
“I was traumatized by it,” Lily-Rose confessed, probably while side-eyeing her childhood. “Not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him! I got super upset.”
Let’s pause for a moment of solidarity with toddler Lily-Rose, sobbing over Edward Scissorhands while her Cheerios went soggy in her bowl.
“I remember being petrified,” she continued, adding, “Which is weird, because I don’t remember much else from being that young. Like, I barely remember learning to walk, but Edward Scissorhands? Burned into my brain forever.” Honestly, same, girl. Same.
But wait—it gets better. Lily-Rose then made a wild connection between Edward Scissorhands and the bloodsucking, shadowy Nosferatu (played by Bill Skarsgård in her new movie). According to her, Edward’s the good guy while Nosferatu is the bad guy, but she feels “a little bit of empathy” for the creepy vampire dude.
“I mean, am I sick for feeling that way?” she asked, probably while questioning all her life choices.
Look, Lily-Rose, if loving misunderstood weirdos is wrong, we don’t want to be right. Edward Scissorhands and Nosferatu might be from different worlds, but they both just needed some hugs. Or, in Edward’s case, maybe some safety gloves.
The Depp family sure knows how to bring the drama—on-screen and off! And honestly? We’re here for it.
