Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu has finally decided to address the elephant in the Gucci showroom: the long, long, long awaited sequel. Yes, the one we’ve all been waiting for since we walked out of the theater six years ago, clutching our hearts and wondering if Nick and Rachel would ever grace our screens again. Spoiler alert: not anytime soon.
Jon recently opened up about the sequel’s status, and it’s giving us “hard-to-get” vibes. Speaking to Deadline, he essentially said, “I’m not bringing the gang back unless it’s going to blow your minds.” (Okay, not a direct quote, but you get the idea.) He elaborated, “There’s too much on the line for everybody.” Translation? He’s not about to serve up leftovers from the writers’ room buffet.
The Plot Thickens (or Doesn’t?)
According to Chu, the sequel script has been as elusive as a Birkin bag in a sample sale. “We’ve tried all different versions,” he confessed. Apparently, adapting the second book isn’t as straightforward as slapping it onto a screenplay. While the first movie nailed the vibes, the plot of the book and movie didn’t exactly match up.
“We haven’t gotten there,” Chu admitted, likely while dodging furious fans armed with sequins and pitchforks. And honestly, respect—he’s not about to drag us back into the Crazy Rich Asians universe unless it’s dripping in diamonds and perfection.
A Glimmer of Hope (Sort Of?)
But don’t lose hope yet, dear fans! Chu teased a little something-something to keep us going. Apparently, the sequel is currently shapeshifting into a Broadway musical. Yes, you read that right—singing, dancing, and probably more glitter than a K-pop concert.
“It’s very exciting and very fun,” Jon teased, as if that would be enough to soothe our sequel-starved souls. Oh, and by the way, it’ll also mark his big Broadway directorial debut. Because if you’re going to make us wait for a sequel, you might as well dazzle us on stage in the meantime.
What Now?
The Crazy Rich Asians sequel is still chilling in development limbo, sipping on champagne and refusing to commit. But hey, at least we’ve got a Broadway musical to look forward to. Maybe by the time it hits theaters—or, let’s be real, if it ever does—we’ll all be sipping martinis and reminiscing about the days when we thought six years was a long time to wait.
Until then, let’s keep dreaming of over-the-top weddings, mahjong showdowns, and the hope that Jon M. Chu will one day give us the sequel we deserve. Or at least a Crazy Rich Spin-Off.
