So, Glen Powell wants to set the record straight: No, he is NOT replacing Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible series. Sure, he and Tom are pals, and yes, he’s Hollywood’s new heartthrob, but apparently, not even the allure of wearing one of Ethan Hunt’s jackets is enough to lure him into the “Cruise Control Zone.”
But let’s rewind. This all kicked off when the Mission: Impossible franchise announced that the eighth movie would be titled The Final Reckoning, which sounds suspiciously like, “Tom Cruise might finally take a vacation.” Naturally, fans immediately went wild, assuming Tom would pass the torch (or possibly the exploding briefcase) to Glen Powell. But Glen? He’s shutting it down faster than an unapproved stunt in a Mission: Impossible movie.
Glen’s Got Some Solid Reasons
“My mom would never let me do that,” Glen said, dropping this bombshell on The Pat McAfee Show. If there’s one person scarier than a supervillain with a nuclear weapon, it’s a mom with a “no-action-movies-for-my-son” policy. Glen added that Mission: Impossible is “the worst gig in town, everybody knows that.”
And then came his pièce de résistance: “That’s a death trap.” And he’s right—the Mission: Impossible movies aren’t about solving missions so much as they are about Tom Cruise finding new ways to terrify insurance agents. We’re talking helicopter barrel rolls, hanging off cliffs, diving out of planes, and whatever other daredevilry Tom’s dreaming up. Glen’s smart enough to know that if he took the gig, he’d probably have to skydive off a building while simultaneously defusing a bomb and eating a sandwich, all for the sake of “realism.”
What Can We Expect?
So, if Glen Powell isn’t taking over as Ethan Hunt, then who is? At this rate, maybe Mission: Impossible 9 will star an invincible Cruise bot, or perhaps Cruise himself will just keep going until he’s the only cast member who’s also a historical monument. But one thing’s for sure—Glen Powell won’t be hanging from helicopters anytime soon.
For now, we’ll keep watching Glen do what he does best: looking handsome, avoiding death traps, and letting Tom Cruise have all the fun… or the falls, rather.
Let's call Glen Powell…
We just wanted to say congratulations..
