Val Kilmer, Hollywood’s resident heartthrob and occasional troublemaker, is getting a heartfelt (and hilariously honest) sendoff from none other than Cher. Yes, THE Cher. If that isn’t proof of a legendary life, I don’t know what is.
For those who missed a few decades, Val—famous for Top Gun and making every ‘80s heart swoon—was once the guy who dated Cher. Yes, THE Cher. (Honestly, that alone should be on his Wikipedia under “Achievements.”) The two met in 1981 at a party hosted by Meryl Streep, because of course that’s how legends collide. They had a whirlwind romance, but even after their breakup, they remained close friends—kind of like if Romeo and Juliet had better communication skills and a stronger Wi-Fi connection.
After news broke that Val passed away on April 1 (not a cruel April Fools’ joke, we checked), Cher took to X—formerly Twitter, but still just as chaotic—to post a tribute:
“VALUS. Will miss u, U Were Funny, crazy, pain in the ass, GREAT FRIEND, kids💜U, BRILLIANT as Mark Twain. BRAVE here during ur sickness.”
A pain in the ass but a great friend? If that’s not the highest form of love, I don’t know what is.
Last year, Cher even admitted she was madly in love with Val back in the day. And honestly, if you’re going to be one of Cher’s great loves, you’ve basically won life. Val Kilmer—actor, icon, forever cherished pain in the ass—will be missed.
