America Ferrera spilled the beans on her decision to jump into the shoes of a white, Trump-supporting lady in the movie Dumb Money.
In a chat with Variety, the Barbie enthusiast spilled the tea on why she found her character Jenny, a single mom and Trump aficionado, absolutely riveting. Apparently, it was like the universe offering her a chance to play someone who wasn’t Latina.
The 2023 cinematic masterpiece is a spin-off from the book The Antisocial Network by the mighty Ben Mezrich. It tells the tale of a gang of rookie investors taking on a squad of billionaires, transforming GameStop into the hottest sensation since sliced bread.
“It was one of those moments in my career when I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m being considered for a role that wasn’t crafted for a Latina,'” Ferrera spilled, with wide-eyed disbelief.
She went on, “What intrigued me about that character was our assumptions about what a working-class, struggling mom thinks and believes in this crazy world.”
“I genuinely empathize with that character. It wasn’t about the moolah. She was fueled by a sense of an idea.”
“That was her jackpot — the feeling of power and being part of an idea,” cheekily added the Latina actress, proving that sometimes, it’s not about the green bills but the thrill of joining the wild rollercoaster of ideas.
