Is Adrien Brody really persona non grata at Saturday Night Live? The man himself has finally weighed in, and let’s just say… it’s complicated.
Back in May 2003, Adrien did what can only be described as “going rogue” while introducing musical guest Sean Paul. Instead of sticking to the script (you know, the thing they pay writers to create), Brody donned a dreadlocks wig and delivered the intro in what could only be called a… “creative” Jamaican accent. Let’s just say it wasn’t giving island vibes—it was giving “this-is-going-to-age-badly” energy.
Fast forward to today, and Adrien is out here defending his actions like a man who knows exactly how many bridges he’s burned but can’t quite remember where. Speaking to Vulture, he explained that he had tried the bit during dress rehearsal. “I think [Lorne Michaels] wasn’t happy with me embellishing a bit,” Adrien admitted, “but they allowed me to. I thought that was a safe space to do that, weirdly.”
Safe space? Sir, SNL is not therapy—it’s live television. And Lorne Michaels’ face is the safe-space barometer. If he looks like he just bit into a lemon, you’re in dangerous territory.
Now, about those rumors that Brody is banned from the show. “I don’t think that’s the case,” he said, before adding the kicker: “But I also have never been invited back on. So I don’t know what to tell you.” Translation: “Technically, the door’s open, but I’m not holding my breath.”
While SNL may not be blowing up his phone, Adrien isn’t exactly crying into his Oscar. This past weekend, he snagged a Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for The Brutalist. Oh, and the movie itself took home Best Motion Picture, Drama. So yeah, Adrien’s doing just fine—even if his Jamaican accent has been sentenced to a lifetime ban from television history.
Would he go back to SNL if invited? Who knows. But one thing’s for sure: the wig stays retired.
