Wickedly Talented! Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande Might Be Fighting for the Same Emmy—No Broomsticks Allowed

Buy Me A Coffee

The Wicked witches are stirring up some Emmy-level chaos! Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande just went from “Defying Gravity” to defying genre categories because they might BOTH be nominated for the same dang Emmy this year.

Yes, you read that right. These two sparkly sorceresses, fresh off their Oscar nods for Wicked (a movie so hyped it’s got its own fanbase and it hasn’t even dropped yet), might be hexing the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category at the 2025 Emmys. That’s right—comedy queens, too. Is there anything they can’t do? Fly, sing, act, emotionally destroy us with a single note… no, they can’t not slay.

Here’s the tea:

🧙‍♀️ Cynthia “I-Dare-You-Not-To-Cry-When-She-Sings” Erivo is in the running thanks to her guest appearance in Poker Face, aka the Peacock series where Natasha Lyonne solves crimes like your nosy aunt who’s watched too much Dateline. Cynthia showed up, did her thing, and left no crumbs.

🎤 Ariana “Yes, My High Ponytail Has Its Own SAG Card” Grande is being considered for her hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, where she gave us skits, impressions, and maybe a few vocal runs that caused dogs to bark in several time zones.

Variety is out here like the Sorting Hat of Hollywood, predicting who might be in the Emmy mix. Alongside Cynthia and Ariana, we’ve got Jamie Lee “Curtis-y of Awards Season” in The Bear, Melissa “Don’t-Mess-With-Me” McCarthy in Only Murders in the Building, Julianne “Definitely More Than Just One Hack” Nicholson in Hacks, and Sarah Polley in The Studio, which sounds like an Emmy bait show if we’ve ever heard one.

Cynthia’s no stranger to the Emmy club. She nabbed a Daytime Emmy back in 2017 for a musical performance that was so good, the category retired. (Seriously, it’s gone now. She literally ended it.) She also got a Primetime nom in 2021 for her role in Genius, where she played Aretha Franklin and probably gave half the Academy goosebumps for a week.

As for Ariana? If she gets the nomination, this will be her first ever Emmy nom, which means we’re either crying proud tears or plotting how to throw her a glitter-filled celebration parade. TBD.

So buckle up, because come Emmy season, it might be witch vs. witch—but make it fabulous, make it funny, and please let there be a duet on the red carpet.

May the best diva win. 💅✨
