Venom: The Last Dance’s director, Kelly Marcel, finally spills the alien goo on why Michelle Williams won’t be gracing the third film. Yeah, Anne Weying’s out — but don’t worry, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is back, and he’s bringing his favorite parasite, Venom, along for the ride. Buckle up. It’s not just any road trip; it’s one with existential crises and tentacle hugs.
For those who missed the memo, Michelle Williams played Anne, Eddie’s ex-girlfriend-turned-“I-guess-I-don’t-hate-you” ally, in the first two films. But in this latest installment? Poof! No Anne. Just Eddie, Venom, and enough chaotic bromance to make a buddy comedy weep.
When asked by The Hollywood Reporter why Michelle’s Anne is MIA this time, Kelly Marcel gave an answer that sounds like a love letter to emotional turmoil.
“Venom: The Last Dance is a road movie,” Kelly said. “And let’s be real — nothing says ‘quality road trip’ like ditching all your emotional baggage. We wanted to yeet Eddie and Venom out of San Francisco, away from all the exes, friends, and anything remotely resembling comfort. Think Thelma and Louise, but with more slime and fewer cliff dives.”
Translation: If Eddie and Venom had too many distractions — like feelings or plot continuity — they wouldn’t be able to achieve full symbiosis. And we need them in peak symbiosis mode because, apparently, their bromantic partnership is also a disaster waiting to happen.
“They’re realizing that their greatest strength is also their biggest curse,” Marcel continued. “Classic. So, all the side characters — except Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen, of course, because let’s be honest, she’s the real MVP — didn’t fit into this high-octane, eat-your-neighbors-and-hit-the-highway vibe.”
Anne’s not on this wild ride because… well, Eddie and Venom are too busy figuring out how not to destroy the world with their togetherness. Honestly, who hasn’t been there?
Catch Venom: The Last Dance in theaters October 25, because if you thought your relationships were complicated, wait till you see two dudes, one body, and a whole lot of emotional mess trying to be a “Lethal Protector” on the open road.
