Fans of The Serpent Queen are shedding royal tears! Starz has officially pulled the plug on the show, canceling it faster than a botched French coup d’état. Yep, you heard right: the curtain has fallen after only two seasons. And just when things were getting serpenty good!
This regal axing was announced on Wednesday night (because apparently, Starz knows how to ruin midweek vibes) per Deadline. So, if you had plans to binge-watch a third season of poison, backstabbing, and powdered wigs, you might want to rethink your weekend.
But hold your goblets, there’s a silver lining! While The Serpent Queen has been locked away in the TV dungeon, there’s a spinoff in the works! And guess who’s taking the throne? Minnie Driver’s Queen Elizabeth I, the woman with the sharpest tongue and ruff that could double as a neck brace! Driver sashayed into season two like a Tudor boss, and now she’s about to have her very own show—because apparently, you can’t keep a good queen down.
For those who missed the royal tea, The Serpent Queen starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici, aka the OG power-hungry queen who ruled France like she was playing chess while everyone else was stuck on checkers. This show was all about how Catherine went from royal underdog to top dog, making power moves that would have made Machiavelli weep into his manuscript. The series was based on Leonie Frieda’s book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France, which is fancy-speak for “Girlboss of the Renaissance.”
But don’t sob into your velvet handkerchief just yet—the dream team behind The Serpent Queen (that’s writer/executive producer Justin Haythe and producer Erwin Stoff, in case you were wondering) are working on this Elizabethan spinoff. So, we’ll probably get more drama, intrigue, and enough ruffles to stock an entire Ren Faire.
While no official casting has been announced, rumor has it that Minnie Driver will be back, ready to rule, sip tea, and throw shade across the English Channel. Long live the queen… again!
