Pack up your dream journals and toss that sand back in the hourglass, because The Sandman is officially taking an eternal nap!
Netflix has pulled the plug on the DC Comics-based series after just two seasons, proving once again that even the Lord of Dreams himself isn’t immune to the cruel whims of streaming executives.
Showrunner Allan Heinberg delivered the news like a medieval scribe trying to soften a royal decree:
“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”
Translation: They knew the dream would eventually turn into a nightmare of dwindling episodes, so they prepped accordingly. Heinberg went on to say how grateful they were to Netflix for letting them at least tell the story they wanted before the streaming giant whispered, “That’ll do, Dream, that’ll do.”
Season one, starring the ever-brooding Tom Sturridge, hit Netflix in November 2022 and captivated fans with its dark, dreamy visuals. Season two hasn’t even dropped yet (talk about an awkward breakup mid-text!), but don’t worry—Netflix has assured fans that those episodes will still see the light of day before the show drifts off into the void.
So, pour one out for The Sandman and remember: No matter how powerful you are, nothing can stop the cold, merciless hand of Netflix’s cancellation squad. Sweet dreams!
