Netflix Cancels ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ After One Season

Buy Me A Coffee

Well, grab your tissues or your favorite brand of ectoplasm, because Netflix just pulled the plug on Dead Boy Detectives. And no, they won’t be coming back as ghostly season two apparitions.

As of Friday (August 30), the quirky series based on Neil Gaiman’s comic about two very dead (but still very busy) boys has been given the eternal afterlife equivalent of a “nope.” Variety broke the news, and honestly, it’s like Netflix just sent the boys a “You’ve Been Ghosted” text. One season and poof! Gone. I mean, seriously, they’re already dead. Couldn’t Netflix at least give them another season to haunt us with?

Starring George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as the titular dead duo, the show followed these charmingly deceased pals as they tackled supernatural mysteries like it was their posthumous part-time job. I mean, if I were dead, I’d be busy haunting my enemies, not solving ghost puzzles. But hey, they had a good run.

The cast also included Kassius Nelson, Yuyu Kitamura, Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, David Iacono, Lukas Gage, and Ruth Connell—basically, a lineup so star-studded it could wake the dead. But apparently, even star power couldn’t save this afterlife detective show from its premature Netflix doom.

The first (and now only) season dropped in April 2024, giving us just enough time to fall in love with these charming ghost boys before Netflix decided to give them the ol’ “Sorry, we’re moving on to less-dead content” treatment.

Oh, and just to twist the ectoplasmic knife, Dead Boy Detectives was part of the Sandman universe—yes, THAT Sandman, also based on a Gaiman masterpiece. While the dead boys are stuck in eternal reruns, The Sandman season two is still rolling ahead on Netflix, because apparently, Morpheus gets to live (well, sort of) while our ghostly gumshoes are left in cancellation purgatory.

So, here’s to Dead Boy Detectives—you may be gone from our screens, but you’ll live forever in the supernatural comedy corner of our hearts… or at least until Netflix changes its mind and revives you for a Halloween special.
