Millie Bobby Brown has officially called out the internet’s weird obsession with her appearance— and Matt Lucas is the latest to get caught in the crossfire.
Earlier this week, the Stranger Things star, who is now 21 and legally allowed to roll her eyes at the media, blasted critics for their “disturbing” comments about her looks. She basically told everyone to take their unsolicited opinions, package them nicely, and toss them into the nearest black hole.
But one name in particular popped up in her callout—British comedian Matt Lucas, 51, who found himself in hot water for comparing Millie to his iconic (depending on who you ask) Little Britain character, Vicky Pollard.
The drama started when Matt, in what we can only assume was an attempt at lighthearted humor, posted a side-by-side comparison of Millie in a pink tracksuit with her hair in a messy bun—eerily similar to his fictional character, Vicky, whose entire personality revolves around saying “Yeah, but no, but yeah…” in a way that makes your brain short-circuit.
Once Millie let the internet know she was not amused, Matt pulled a full-on “Wait, wait, I can explain!” and took to Instagram to apologize.
“Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some context,” Matt wrote, likely sweating profusely while typing.
He then launched into a history lesson about his Little Britain days, explaining that Vicky Pollard—aka, the tracksuit-wearing queen of nonsense—has existed for nearly 25 years. Matt insisted he only posted the comparison because of the coincidental fashion choices, not to throw shade.
“I thought you looked terrific,” he added, attempting to shovel himself out of the mess. “I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you—firstly, because that’s not my style, and secondly, because I think you’re brilliant.”
After realizing his joke had landed like a lead balloon, Matt wrapped up with a sincere apology: “I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you, but I realize it has and for that, I apologize. Matt x.”
And with that, another celebrity misunderstanding is added to the ever-growing list of “Things That Probably Wouldn’t Have Happened If Everyone Just Put Their Phones Down for Five Minutes.”
Will Millie accept Matt’s apology? Will she hit him with a Yeah, but no, but yeah response of her own? Stay tuned.
