In a turn of events that only 2024 could bring, Katy Perry took to Instagram on Saturday (June 1) to sprinkle some much-needed humor and inclusivity over Harrison Butker’s eyebrow-raising commencement speech. The Kansas City Chiefs kicker’s original address at Benedictine College went viral in May for all the wrong reasons, but fear not! Katy’s here to save the day with her trusty editing skills.
Posting a video that had her followers cackling, Katy transformed Butker’s controversial comments into a message so uplifting, even a grumpy cat would purr. “Fixed this for my girls, my graduates, and my gays — you can do anything, congratulations and happy pride 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ 🧡,” she proclaimed with the confidence of someone who knows the true power of a well-placed emoji.
The revamped snippet now features Harrison sounding like a champion of progress and equality. Imagine him, standing there, saying: “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives.” You can almost hear the confetti cannons going off in the background!
The hilarity continued as the edited speech had him musing, “How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you’re going to get in your career? I would venture to guess the women here today are going to lead successful careers in the world.” Take that, glass ceiling!
But the pièce de résistance? “I say all of this to you because I have seen it firsthand, how much happier someone can be supporting women and not saying that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” the edited Harrison declared. If this were a movie, there’d be a standing ovation right about now.
As if that wasn’t enough to leave everyone in stitches, the speech concluded with a flourish: “The road ahead is bright, things are changing, society is shifting and people young and old are embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion.” And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the grand finale: “With that said, I want to say happy Pride Month to all of you,” followed by a mic drop-worthy, “And congratulations Class of 2024.”
