Jane Fonda Has a Two-Word Reaction to ‘Barbarella’ & ‘9 to 5’ Remakes—And It’s Iconic

Buy Me A Coffee

Jane Fonda is officially in her “cool grandma who doesn’t have time for nonsense” era.

When asked about the upcoming remakes of Barbarella and 9 to 5, the legendary actress, 87, did what only true icons can do—she responded with just two words and still managed to steal the whole conversation.

Let’s set the scene:

– Back in 2022, Hollywood decided to sprinkle some Sydney Sweeney on Barbarella because apparently, we’re rebooting everything now.
– Then, last year, Jennifer Aniston and Diablo Cody joined forces like an unexpected but weirdly intriguing superhero duo to revive *9 to 5*.

With all this remake energy swirling around, Vogue asked Jane what she thought.

Her response?

“Good luck.”

Oof. Two words that say so much.

After that mic-drop moment, she elaborated just a little, explaining that she, Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin had actually tried to revive 9 to 5 themselves, but they just couldn’t find the right script. And if the three queens of comedy couldn’t crack it, well… good luck, indeed.

She also pointed out that if a remake is happening, it needs to acknowledge the absolute mess that is today’s office culture. Back in the ‘80s, 9 to 5 tackled workplace nightmares like sexist bosses and wage inequality—stuff that, unfortunately, hasn’t magically disappeared.

But today? It’s even worse. Jane laid out the bleak reality:

– Office workers today would probably be hired as contractors.
– They wouldn’t even meet their boss.
– Reporting wage theft? To who?!
– Forget one job—people are juggling three just to afford rent.

Basically, if the new 9 to 5 doesn’t address how modern work culture is basically a survival game, then Jane doesn’t want any part of it.

As for Barbarella, Jane said no one has even asked for her input, but she’s got ideas. She’s not planning to step back into that intergalactic go-go outfit (though, let’s be real, she could), but she’s totally down to offer her wisdom.

“If Sydney asks, I’ll let her know,” Jane said, adding that she doesn’t know Sweeney personally but thinks she’s “great” and will probably be a fantastic Barbarella.

– Jane is unbothered.
– Hollywood is rebooting everything.
– If a 9 to 5 remake happens, it better say something important.
– Jane Fonda remains the queen of short, savage responses.

And to that, we say: Good luck trying to top her.
