Halsey, the 29-year-old Grammy-nominated superhuman, has graced the universe with a fresh track called “Ego,” presumably because what else are we going to sing to in front of the bathroom mirror?
On Friday, September 6, the musical sorceress dropped the song and a music video that has already left fans wondering if they, too, are starring in a dramatic indie film every time they step out for groceries. (Spoiler: yes, you are).
In “Ego,” Halsey serenades us with the timeless struggle of being an adult human, which, let’s be honest, is a tragic comedy in itself. “I think that I should try to kill my ego / ‘Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me,” she sings, likely channeling the internal dialogue we all have during the last five minutes of every workday. “I’m all grown up but somehow lately / I’m acting like a f–king baby,” she continues, capturing the essence of our collective life crisis in one catchy chorus.
But wait, there’s more! In a move that’s equal parts genius and mildly concerning, Halsey decided that one Halsey just wasn’t enough for this music video. So, what did she do? She cast herself in both lead roles. Yep, that’s right—double the Halsey, double the existential confusion! Directed by who else but the star herself, this is the video equivalent of when you argue with yourself in the shower about how you should’ve responded to that awkward text last week.
“Ego” is the latest gem from Halsey’s forthcoming album, The Great Impersonator, which is dropping October 25th. The title suggests she’s about to impersonate the concept of sanity, and quite frankly, we’re here for it. Buckle up—October is going to be a ride.
