Jon M. Chu, the director of Wicked and now, apparently, the internet’s official rumor police, is setting the record straight.
After reports swirled that he would be directing the film adaptation of Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me, the internet did what it does best—spiral into absolute chaos. A viral tweet (because of course) claimed that none other than Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Millie Bobby Brown were locked in an all-out Hollywood showdown for the role of Britney Spears.
We’re talking full-on Hunger Games levels of competition here—at least, according to the internet.
But Jon M. Chu? Oh, he was not having it.
“None of this is true,” he declared, probably while sipping coffee and wondering why he even opened Twitter that day.
He added, “Sounds exciting but have not had one conversation about casting this movie yet. We are way too early in development. Sorry 🤷🏻.”
Translation: Y’all are getting way ahead of yourselves.
Despite Chu’s reality check, the internet remains undefeated, with at least one of the rumored contenders saying she would “love” to play Britney. Another actress, likely somewhere in a dimly lit Hollywood café, noticed that fans were rallying for her to take the role.
And just like that, the speculation continues. Because let’s be honest, nothing—nothing—fuels Hollywood like a juicy casting rumor. Stay tuned for the next round of celebrity battle royale, where we’ll probably find out that Timothée Chalamet is somehow in the mix, too.
