Bill Gates, tech billionaire and former Microsoft overlord, has spoken candidly about the “oh-so-fun” process of splitting up with his ex-wife Melinda Gates, and spoiler alert: it was about as enjoyable as a Windows update at 2 a.m.
The 69-year-old business magnate and his partner in philanthropy crime called it quits in May 2021, and by August, their divorce papers were officially signed, sealed, and delivered. But apparently, even billions can’t soften the blow of a broken heart—or, in Bill’s case, a rebooted marital status.
The Regret Files: Divorce Edition
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Bill didn’t hold back when asked if his divorce ranked as his life’s biggest blunder.
“You’d have to put that at the top of the list,” he admitted, undoubtedly scrolling through his mental list of other awkward life decisions, like Windows Vista. “There are others, but none that matter,” he added, clearly implying this one was the final boss of regret.
He described the two-year post-divorce period as “miserable” for both him and Melinda—because what says misery like dividing up yachts and private islands?
Melinda, the Real MVP
Reflecting on their relationship, Bill got nostalgic: “When Melinda and I met, I was successful—but, you know, not ridiculously successful. That came later, and she stuck with me through it all.”
Translation: She endured his geeky phase, pre-billions glow-up, and possibly years of awkward PowerPoint presentations over dinner.
But the divorce wasn’t the only split. In July 2021, Melinda decided to bounce from the philanthropic empire they built together. “When she chose to leave the foundation, I was disappointed,” Bill admitted. “Like, come on, Melinda—two decades of saving the world together, and you’re just gonna log out?”
All’s Well That Ends (Sort of) Well
Still, the former couple has managed to stay civil, proving that billion-dollar divorces can be more Namaste than War of the Roses. “We still see each other,” Bill said. “We’ve got three kids, two grandkids, and a calendar full of family events. It’s basically like a group project that never ends, but the kids are great—they’ve got good values.”
Even in 2025, Bill Gates is doing his best to debug his life and keep things running smoothly—even if the Divorce.exe program left a few error messages along the way.
