Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan are about to make you swoon, cry, and aggressively Google “how to get over fictional heartbreak.”
That’s right—Butler, the man who spent years method-acting his way into Elvis’ voice, and Ronan, queen of devastating period dramas, are joining forces for Deep Cuts, an A24 romance directed by Sean Durkin (a.k.a. the mastermind behind The Iron Claw). The film is based on Holly Brickley’s debut novel, which probably already made at least three people weep in a bookstore.
The Plot: A Musical Love Story, But Make It Angsty
According to sources, the movie is set in the 2000s (a.k.a. the golden era of burnt CDs and questionable fashion choices) and follows two music-obsessed twentysomethings trying to navigate ambition, belonging, and adulthood—so basically, expect a lot of brooding stares, vintage band T-shirts, and emotionally charged walks in the rain.
Durkin previously worked with A24 on The Iron Claw, a movie that made people unexpectedly care about wrestling, starring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White. Since that film was a critical hit, expectations for Deep Cuts are sky-high—which is exactly where our emotional stability won’t be once this movie drops.
Will this film make us nostalgic for early-2000s romance? Will we leave the theater with an uncontrollable urge to make a MySpace playlist? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan are about to steal our hearts—and maybe emotionally wreck us in the process.
