Pedro Pascal and Jay Ellis just strutted onto the black carpet in Oakland for the premiere of their wild new movie, Freaky Tales—and let’s just say, the vibes were immaculate.
These two leading men weren’t alone, though. The cast rolled deep with Ben Mendelsohn (aka “that guy who’s always in crime dramas”), Jack Champion (you know, Spider from Avatar), Keir Gilchrist (resident indie film king), Too $hort (yes, THAT Too $hort), Ji-young Yoo, Dominique Thorne, and actual NBA legend Sleepy Floyd, who, fun fact, played so well in the ’80s they literally made a movie with a basketball subplot.
And of course, we have to shout out the masterminds behind this cinematic fever dream, writers and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who previously gave us Captain Marvel and now apparently decided, “Let’s throw every chaotic ’80s trope into one movie and see what happens.”
So, what’s Freaky Tales actually about? Buckle up. It’s 1987 in Oakland, and the film is described as a “multi-track mixtape” (which, let’s be honest, is just a fancy way of saying “pure madness”). Expect an NBA star, a crooked cop, a rap duo, punk kids, neo-Nazis (because of course), and a debt collector all somehow colliding in what can only be described as a high-stakes showdown of ’80s proportions.
In short: it’s messy, it’s wild, and it’s freaky. Just the way we like it. Freaky Tales arrives April 4.
