In what feels like a plot twist ripped straight out of a Hollywood drama, Netflix has canceled the New York City premiere of Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx’s much-anticipated movie Back in Action. The culprit? California, which seems to be auditioning for the role of “World’s Most Flammable State.”
“Due to the tragic fires, we’re hitting the brakes on our Back in Action NYC premiere,” Netflix said in a somber yet PR-polished statement to Variety. “A lot of people in our industry—and their friends and family—are being impacted right now. Our hearts go out to them. We’re sorry if this messes up your premiere plans, and we thank you for not raging at us on Twitter about it.”
Cue sad violins.
But wait, there’s more! This movie isn’t just any old action flick; it marks the triumphant return of Cameron Diaz after an 11-year hiatus. Yes, she ghosted Hollywood for over a decade, leaving us to wonder if she’d gone full-on The Holiday IRL and moved to some quaint English cottage to bake pies or something.
For those not already camped out on their couch with popcorn, Back in Action tells the story of Emily and Matt, ex-CIA spies who hung up their gadgets to embrace suburban bliss. Naturally, things go kaboom when their cover gets blown, dragging them back into the spy game faster than you can say, “Where’s the babysitter?”
And here’s the kicker: the movie hits Netflix on January 17, so you don’t even need to leave your house to catch it. No fancy premiere outfits or awkwardly sipping champagne while pretending you totally belong at an A-list event.
So, mark your calendars, stream the trailer, and light a candle (safely!) for California. Let’s hope Diaz and Foxx don’t have to cancel their next event because, I don’t know, giant lizards start roaming L.A. or something.
