Oh, the suspense! The shocking twists! The sinister secrets! And… the cancellation. Yep, grab your tissues and your most suspicious glances because Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is officially dunzo.
On a fateful Friday (Sept. 20, not that we’re crying over here), Max — the platform formerly known as HBO Max, not some dude with a clipboard — announced that the beloved spinoff, starring Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, and Mallory Bechtel, has been unceremoniously ghosted after two seasons. And no, not the fun kind of ghost like Casper or your Aunt Linda who still thinks you’re going to med school.
Apparently, Max decided not to push forward with a third season of “these liars who tell lies” because, well, maybe they ran out of sins? In a statement given to TVLine, Max somberly thanked the co-creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (a guy whose name has more plot twists than the show) and Lindsay Calhoon Bring (who probably didn’t “bring” enough, I guess?), along with those at Warner Bros. TV. Because who doesn’t love a creepy villain scaring a small town, am I right?
“We’re so grateful for this new pack of liars,” Max said, wiping away what I assume were digital tears. “They fought the latest creepy villain like champs. Millwood was terrified. Rosewood is nodding in approval from a distance.”
The show, in all its horror-filled, jump-scare glory, was praised for being edgy and paying homage to its OG Pretty Little Liars roots — where the main pastime was receiving weird text messages from a hoodie-wearing stalker and having more secrets than a spy convention.
Original Sin first premiered in 2022, which, if you blinked, feels like yesterday, and its second season, Summer School, aired between May and June 2024. But, alas, there will be no fall semester for these liars. The bell has rung. And yes, we are totally suspicious about who made that call.
So, pour one out for the Liars and their sins. They may be gone, but they’ll live forever in our hearts, our streaming history, and probably a few more PLL fan theories we’ll obsess over until the end of time.
