Laverne Cox is weighing some serious flight plans in case America pulls a “Trump Part Deux.”
In a spicy chat with Variety, the Orange Is the New Black star got real about her concerns for a second Trump presidency – and she’s not alone. Apparently, she and a bunch of her trans friends have been dusting off their passports and scoping out “future home” possibilities around Europe and the Caribbean.
“Right now, we’re on Google Earth doing a deep dive into any European or tropical paradise that doesn’t give us a ‘hostile to trans people’ vibe,” Laverne said. And she’s not kidding. With friends saying things like, “I’ve already got an apartment in Spain,” or, “I’m learning French in case we land in Martinique!” it sounds like an unofficial trans migration plan might actually be in the works.
She then hit the historical button with a comparison that snapped to attention – to Germany in the Weimar days. “Before things went sideways in Nazi Germany, Berlin was this rainbow-hued oasis of queer life. Then, bam, marginalized communities, like Jewish people and queer folk, were hit the hardest.” She’s seeing what she calls “red flags,” but unfortunately, they’re the “not very festive” kind.
Laverne’s fear goes beyond what she calls “standard-issue celebrity concerns” and straight into “I could be on some watch list for just existing.” “They’re out here dropping almost $100 million on anti-trans ads like it’s pocket change,” she said, shaking her head.
And while she knows leaving the country isn’t everyone’s option, her priority seems to be making sure there’s somewhere safe out there if things go truly bonkers. For now, though, she’s still calling America home… but you might catch her browsing Italian Airbnbs and sipping an espresso, just in case.
