Guess who’s about to slice and dice his way into the Scream franchise? Joel McHale! That’s right, the guy who made sarcasm an art form in Community is trading study group shenanigans for slasher movie mayhem. And hold onto your popcorn because he’s playing Mark Evans, Sidney Prescott’s husband. Yep, Sidney—queen of dodging Ghostface—has been busy offscreen, getting married, and probably enjoying very cautious date nights.
Neve Campbell is back as Sidney, which is fantastic news because let’s face it, a Scream movie without her is like a Ghostface mask without the creepy grin. Neve has been the franchise’s scream queen since day one, surviving multiple masked murderers and still managing to keep her bangs intact. She sat out Scream 6 but was name-dropped, probably sipping lattes somewhere safe while everyone else got chased.
The movie is currently being filmed in Atlanta, which, considering the humidity, should add an extra layer of horror. Joining the chaos are Scream veterans Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers, the nosiest reporter alive) and Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks-Martin, who is somehow still alive). Rumor has it that Gale might still have her trusty microphone, because even Ghostface can’t silence a determined journalist.
The film’s roster is a who’s who of fresh victims—I mean, characters—including Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Anna Camp. Isabel is playing Sidney’s daughter, which raises so many questions. Like, does Ghostface have a grudge against Sidney’s whole family tree now? And will Isabel’s character have Sidney’s survival instincts, or is she doomed to trip over everything in her path?
Joel McHale, known for being snarky on Community as Jeff Winger and wrangling animals on Fox’s Animal Control, is probably bringing his deadpan humor to the role of Sidney’s hubby. Let’s just hope he’s better at avoiding knives than sarcastic comebacks. Fun fact: Joel’s also been spotted in FX’s The Bear as a chef and will pop up in Yellowjackets Season 3. This man stays busy, which is good, because Ghostface definitely doesn’t give out vacation days.
So, what’s the plot of Scream 7? Who knows! The franchise thrives on twists, fake-outs, and the occasional “Wait, THEY’RE the killer?” moment. But one thing’s for sure: with Joel McHale in the mix, it’s going to be funny, scary, and maybe a little meta. Just don’t let him monologue too long—Ghostface has a way of interrupting.
