Hold onto your berets because Phoenix just turned the 2024 Paris Olympics into an epic pop concert that even the Eiffel Tower couldn’t help but shimmy to!
On Sunday, August 11, the iconic French band—composed of the wonderfully talented brothers Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai, along with Thomas Mars and Deck D’Arcy—took the stage at the Closing Ceremony like they were auditioning for “Dancing With the Stars: Paris Edition.” And boy, did they deliver!
In a display of musical mayhem, Phoenix unleashed a whirlwind of their greatest hits, fan favorites, and collaborations that were so spectacular, even the Olympic torch might have tried to join in on the fun.
The band was positively giddy in their statement: “We’re over the moon, over the Eiffel Tower, and pretty much over all of Paris! Playing at the Closing Ceremony was like getting a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but with more glitter and fewer Oompa-Loompas. We’re super excited to pass the baton—not literally, of course, because we’re not that athletic—to the Paralympics and to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. Vive la musique, and all that jazz!”
Their set list was a rollercoaster of musical bliss:
1. Phoenix – “Lisztomania”: A song that makes you want to twirl in your most fabulous attire.
2. Kavinsky – “Nightcall” feat. Phoenix and Angèle: Because every epic Olympics needs a touch of neon-lit retro vibes.
3. Phoenix – “If I Ever Feel Better” / “Funky Squaredance” feat. VannDa: For those moments when you’re feeling like a funky robot.
4. AIR – “Playground Love” feat. Phoenix: Proof that playgrounds and love can totally go together.
5. Phoenix – “Tonight” feat. Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend: Perfect for when you’re feeling like a cool cat under the Parisian moonlight.
6. Phoenix – “1901”: A song so good it makes the entire year 1901 jealous.
A Closing Ceremony that turned Paris into a dance party extravaganza. Bravo, Phoenix, for making the Olympics end with a bang and a boogie! 🎉
