The legendary Detox, who you may remember from snatching wigs on RuPaul’s Drag Race, has just come out as transgender during a performance that had fans gagging at Drag Night Chicago (DNC)—and no, DNC doesn’t stand for “Drag Never Chills,” but it should!
On Wednesday night, August 21st (mark your calendars, because it’s about to be a national holiday), the 39-year-old drag superstar took to the stage with her pals, including the ever-mischievous Willam Belli. While serving her signature parody “Chow Down (at Chick-fil-A),” Detox pulled a lyrical stunt bigger than a death drop! You know how the original song goes, “I’m a top” (yes, we’ve all sung that in the mirror at least once). Well, honey, she flipped the script and declared, “I’m trans now!” Mic dropped, wigs snatched, and jaws on the floor. I mean, who says coming out can’t have choreography and a sickening beat?
This iconic revelation was caught by Pink News, who confirmed that Detox is making the transition with all the glamour and sass we’d expect. Fans were quick to spot that Detox has already updated her Instagram pronouns to “she/they,” because, duh, we’re always paying attention!
For those who’ve been living under a rock (or maybe just really deep in the workroom), Detox first appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5, where she placed fourth and left us wondering why the judges didn’t just crown her on the spot. Then, because one run on Drag Race wasn’t enough to quench our thirst for Detox, she returned for All Stars Season 2 and came in a close second. A true icon never quits.
Detox is out here reminding us all that life is a runway, and she’s strutting it like the true queen—and now trans queen—she is!
